Pamper your pooch
Why you should take your pet for a pedicure
It’s a great time of year. The evenings are longer with great light, the days are warming up beautifully and summer is just around the corner. As we #StepintoSummer it’s time to get those feet ready to hit the beach and book a pedicure. Have you thought about a pedi for your pooch? They need grooming just us much as we do. Here are some reasons why it’s so important.
Pets need their nails cut too
Your pet's nails are made out of keratin, just like ours. However, there is one key difference; the quick of a dog’s nails extends into the nail itself, unlike a human. This means that if you cut into the quick, it can be very painful for your pet.
And while you may not be sending them for a paint just yet, it’s important to keep them neat and trimmed. Generally, walking your dog regularly will keep their nails neat. It’s important to note that they need to walk on outdoor surfaces, such as paths and grass. Dogs nails aren’t designed for smooth surfaces found in most households, so if they start slipping it’s time for a trim.
If you are unsure of how to cut your dog's nails by yourself, it’s best to make a booking so one of our experienced nurses save you and your pet the trauma of bleeding nails.
Paws are important too
While you may focus on your dog's nails, caring for the pad of your dog's paws is important too. The pads on the bottom of the feet provide extra cushioning, provide protection from the heat and protect the feet from rough ground.
A gentle clean will keep them in tip top condition. It’s also important to check the paws regularly for any signs of injury, foreign body (such as glass or stones) or infection which may go unnoticed. Left untreated, these can turn into nasty ailments.
